What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic disease of the immune system which causes skin cells to grow too quickly. Normal skin cells would form over weeks. Psoriasis causes skin cells to form in days. Instead of shedding this excess, the skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin causing scaly, red patches to appear. The patches can be itchy or painful .These patches can appear anywhere but are most common on the knees, elbows, lower back, ears and scalp. Sometimes the patches are itchy but they are not contagious.

Who has Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is the most common autoimmune disease in the U.S. As many as 7.5 million Americans have psoriasis. It strikes people of all ages.

What Causes Psoriasis?
Researchers believe that psoriasis sufferers possess a gene that creates a predisposition to psoriasis. However, they also believe that the gene alone would not cause a person to develop psoriasis. Specific factors such as stress, strep throat, skin injury or certain medications might bring it on or aggravate existing psoriasis.

How Psoriatrax Works
The active ingredient in PsoriaTrax is coal tar. Coal tar is approved by the FDA for the treatment of psoriasis.

Coal tar is a derivative of coal. and has been used for medicinal purposes for hundreds of years. The properties in coal tar go to work in two ways:

• Coal tar is thought to naturally inhibit DNA replication of skin cells; slowing down the buildup of excess skin cells, thereby significantly reducing the scaling and thickening of skin.
• Coal tar breaks down keratin, the protein which is the “building block” for skin structure. This helps the excess skin cells (the dry, scaly patches) on the skin surface to break up and shed more easily.

As an added benefit, coal tar offers some anti-itch and anti-inflammatory effects. Generally, the higher the concentration of tar, the more effective the product.

Coal Tar and Hair Loss
More recently, an exciting new benefit of coal tar has been discovered. An enzyme present in coal tar has been found to reduce hair loss by blocking DHT, the protein in the hair shaft responsible for baldness.
